Suicide: a risk factor




It is a sobering fact that suicide is one of the most common cause of premature death among people with mental illness. Feeling suicidal means feeling more pain than you can cope with at the time. But remember, no problem lasts forever. 

With help, you can feel better and keep yourself safe. People get through this. People who feel as badly as you feel now. To get help, you can survive.

If you feel immediately suicidal someone how you feel, ask them to stick with you until you get help, call the medical professional, tell them it is an emergency, ask for the mental health team, call crisis helpline.

What to do during a crisis ?

  • Put your safety plane into action.
  • Delay taking action: promise yourself you'll wait at least 24 hours before acting, to give you time to get help.
  • Make your environment safe: remove objects you could use to hurt yourself like pills, knives or razors.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol
  • Share with someone you trust: it could be a friend, family member, medical professional, member of your spiritual, teacher or helpline counsellor.
  • Soothe and distract yourself.
  • Write positive things down.
  • Write down your goals.
What to do once the crisis has passed?

  • Get ongoing help 
  • Identify your triggers
  • Make a safety plan 
  • Schedule your days
  • Develop new interests
  • Take care of yourself
  • Build your social network
  • Manage your stress.

This is what I want to sure about self help when you feel suicidal.
